Music therapy is appropriate for people of all ages, whether they are musical or not, struggling with illnesses or totally healthy. We work with people suffering from emotional health issues such as grief, anxiety, and depression. With people with special needs, ASD, ADHD to name a few. We also help people address rehabilitative needs after a stroke, a traumatic head injury, or with chronic conditions like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease.
What is Music Therapy?
Music therapy is the use of music to address the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of a group or individual. It is the prescribed use of music, and the relationship that develops through shared musical experiences, to assist or motivate a person towards specific, non-musical goals. Music is used to achieve maximum client participation. Activities include; listening to music, playing a variety of instruments, improvisation, drumming, writing songs, and guided imagery.
Who is Music therapy for?
Music therapy touches all aspects of the mind, body, brain and behaviour. Music can provide a distraction for the mind, it can slow the rhythms of the body, and it can alter our mood, which in turn can influence behaviour.
Music Therapists and what we do:
Music therapists are trained and certified. We are regulated by the Irish Association of Creative Music Therapists. We work in a variety of healthcare and educational settings. Music therapists conduct client assessments, develop treatment plans, implement therapy processes/treatment plans and evaluate progress. Sessions can be held on a one to one or group basis also including families. Clients are empowered and human capabilities are enhanced through music.
